We recently supported the fundraising efforts of Boston-based non-profit organization, the Share Your Love Foundation on behalf of our donation program Canvas for a Cause. This donation began when Debora Guimaraes, founder of the Share Your Love Foundation, submitted an application to our Canvas for a Cause Program with a request to support her organization's upcoming fundraising events. The canvases we provided helped to showcase the many families this organization supports, and aided in their annual fundraising efforts. Keep reading to learn what Debora shared about the Share Your Love Foundation, to see pictures from their spring event, and to learn how you can get involved.
Describe the organization or cause that you support.
The Share Your Love Foundation is located in Boston, Massachusetts. The mission of our organization is to strengthen communities and empower families living below the poverty line in Brazil to achieve academic, professional, social, and emotional success by informing parents and inspiring their youth.
Around 39 million people live below the poverty line in Brazil. Thirty-eight percent of them live with less than $22 per month. The parents of these families are less emotionally responsive due to many stresses they face in order to provide the basics for their families and, as a result, end up living in more violent communities. Consequently, children in these families struggle to learn in school. They have limitations in their ability to cope with stress and may develop depression. The Share Love Foundation addresses the need for social-emotional education, provides help with food and daily meals for 80 students living in one of the poorest regions of Brazil, Vale do Jequitinhonha.
To support these families, both in Brazil, as well as Brazilian families living in the United States, we provide educational workshops for both parents and children. We teach parents the importance of providing a nurturing environment to their children and we help and encourage children with the development of their emotional intelligence. We also offer a "Hope Kit" which provides mothers and young women the chance to attend an entrepreneurship program with arts and crafts classes three-times a week. These classes teach women trade skills and entrepreneurial strategies to enable them to run their own businesses to help support their families. We provide additional funds for children with special needs and each family that we support receives a basket of basic food necessities each month.
How did you get involved with this organization or cause, and does it hold a certain significance for you? If so, why?
I moved to the U.S. from Brazil when I was 17-years-old. I had the chance to attend college and earn my masters degree in social work. I had to work as house cleaner during the day to pay for classes at night. During the long years it took to obtain my degrees, I always thought about how I would eventually use my education for good. As a clinical social worker, I had the opportunity to practice family therapy with low income families. That’s when I became very interested in the 'attachment theory' and emotional intelligence. I wanted to help families in need back in my home country of Brazil while making a lasting impact that would help to change the future generations. This is the reason why I decided to organize an educational non-profit, now know as the Share Your Love Foundation.
How did our donation support your organization or cause?
The Share Your Love Foundation is a small non-profit organization so finding funding for marketing supplies is often a challenge for us. The canvas prints donated by CG Pro Prints had a huge impact on our past two fundraising events. People were impressed by the quality of the canvas and, with them, we can now highlight the faces of the people we work to serve and to motivate more people to donate to this worthy cause.
