Six Things You Can Do to Have a Productive Photography Off Season

As creative business owners we all go through different seasons. While we’re busy, a lot of things have to take a back burner to editing and shooting. That’s fine for a little while, but no business can thrive without a little maintenance. So, if you’re heading into a slower couple of days, weeks, or months, how will you spend it?

It’s important to have a plan going into a slower time so you can make the most of it. You want to launch your business to the next level, not just sit back and let it get stale. So, to help we’re sharing our top six things we prioritize when our shooting schedule slows down.

1) Update Your Website

This is the perfect time to make sure your website is fresh & reflects your best work. After a busy season you’ll have plenty of gorgeous images to add to your portfolio. People  want to see what your work currently looks like! It’s also a great time to spruce up your blog while you have the time to. It will help you get that SEO going strong so you’re ready when busy season hits! If you don’t have a website, there’s no better time to make it happen.

2) Work On Finding New Clients

Off season is the perfect time to reach new clients. There are tons of ways to reach new markets like attending a local bridal show, joining a networking group, creating a sample album for your favorite venue & gifting it to them, or reaching out to vendors in your area. Just think about where your ideal client would best be reached. For example, we've partnered with a local wedding planning boutique and have a listing on their website. For a small fee they send us tons of qualified leads. We also love working on styled shoots with new vendors. This gives us plenty of gorgeous new marketing photos & allows us to make important vendor relationships with people who can refer us. Really, the most important part is thinking of what your ideal bride does when she's looking for a photographer. A bonus tip, add to your contact form a spot for how each couple found you. This can give you a ton of insight on where to start focusing your attention more.

3) Focus On Social Media

Social media can be draining during your busy seasons. It’s hard to plan ahead of time and get a game plan. Once you’re in your slow season come up with a strategy you can implement easily. Also, focusing on growing your social media following during the slow season is a lot easier. You can post more frequently and give it the attention it deserves.

4) Dig Into Education

Hands down, this is our favorite thing to do in our off time. We constantly want to grow and get better. By digging into education when you have the time you can focus on growing. Invest in that new course, go back over ones you own, and hunt down your favorite educational blogs. You won’t regret this!

5) Back-End Business Necessities

This is definitely not the most glamorous part of being business owners. Its necessary though and sometimes the best time to take care of it is when you’re in a slow season. Taxes, renewing your business licenses, updating your contracts, etc. There are a lot of great back end pieces you can take care of in your off season so your business can thrive in the future!

6) Repair/ Clean Your Gear

While you aren’t using it is frequently this is the time to get your gear serviced. Make sure your lenses are clean, you’ve cleared your memory cards, and organized your equipment so you’re ready to go. This will give you a leg up when you’re ready for your next shoot.

We hope this list will help you navigate slower seasons in a way that will empower your business! By implementing these six simple things you’ll be prepared to take your business to the next level!
